Here's something creative that will be appreciated and you will have fun doing:

Make up a crossword puzzle and have all the hints be personal inside moments and jokes that only you two would know about. Put it on a poster board and add some clipart and some pictures to it!

The crossword puzzle could be time consuming and a bit frustrating … you could do the same idea with a WORDSEARCH or WORDFIND puzzle.

Put your computer skills to work! Use Excel, get clipart from Yahoo Images Search, copy them, and reformat them, use a gluestick to put on posterboard.

Use graph paper, and pictures from magazines if you are not as good on the computer, and it will give it a homemade feeling.

Does your mom work? Are there kids at home? If there are small kids at home a certificate for free babysitting would be cute. Or a certificate for a salon or a weekend trip where ever she wants to go. If she's really busy, you can get her a maid for a day. Being a single mom, I would love any of these gifts. I would also be happy with a pitcure colored by my 19 month old!

Gift Cards. Everyone has them and you can't ever go wrong with them. Instead of finding out her shoe size, shirt size etc and buying something she will never wear just get her a gift card at her favortie store and let her choose what she wants. You can even get one at those day spas where she can choose a facial, massage or get her nails done.

I always go one of two routes:
1) get her something sentimental, i.e. engraved picture frames with old pictures in it.
2) give her what she wants: I almost always give music or movies, I try and remember which new movies that she really liked.
My mom's really direct and sometimes she'll give me a list of things that she likes so that it's not so hard to shop for her.

So.. Instead of buying how about making? Bake a cake, make a picture frame and put a special picture in it for her. How about a day out? A nice meal or maybe go somewhere that means something to her.
